Uncovering the Story Behind An Inherited Beautiful Sapphire Ring: A Tale of Love and Family History
As an experienced jeweller who’s been serving our local customers in Melbourne, we often come across certain pieces that hold special meaning and sentimental value. These pieces are often passed down from generation to generation, carrying with them a family’s history and memories. This was exactly what happened a while ago when a lovely lady brought in an inherited ring to us, it was clear that this was more than just a piece of jewellery.
It was an old but beautifully designed blue sapphire ring, unfortunately, with a visible scratch on the sapphire, surrounded with a series of single-cut diamonds. From memory, the customer estimated it to be at least 60-70 years old, if not older.
The wear and tear
It was a beautiful vintage piece, but like any other vintage jewellery, the ring had seen better days. Firstly, we noticed that the band of the ring was thin, the settings were worn from wear and tear over the years, and the customer’s finger size was a bit bigger than the ring’s original size. It was clear that this ring needed some form of repair, and it all comes down to understanding what our customer.
Understanding the customer before anything else

But before any work could be done, we needed to take the time to communicate extensively with the customer. One of the most important parts of what we do is to understand the significance of the ring, and what the customer hoped to achieve with it. Through this conversation, we learned that the customer had a deep attachment to the ring and wanted to wear it as a reminder of her family’s history. She really wanted the remodelled ring to resemble the look and feel of the existing piece with reinforced structure. We knew that just repairing the ring would not be enough, as it might not last as long as the customer anticipates. So instead, we suggested remodelling the ring.
The customer was hesitant at first, unsure if remodelling the ring would mean losing its sentimental value. However, we reassured her that the ring’s sentimental value would remain intact, and that the remodelling would only enhance its beauty and durability while not compromising the current look and feel. We proposed a minor redesign of the ring by adding a few diamonds due to the change of size of the ring, and also adding more material to reinforce it to make it last longer. In addition, the size of the ring was also adjusted to fit the customer perfectly.

Eventually, the customer felt a lot more comfortable with the proposal, and the remodelling plan was finalised. We got straight in to work on the ring.
It was a simple yet delicate process, requiring a great deal of care and attention. The team worked tirelessly to make sure that every detail was perfect, from the placement of the diamonds to the overall structure of the ring.

Finally, the day came when the ring was ready, and to be honest, we were as excited as the customer was. She came into Gillian’s Jewellery, excited to see the final result. When she saw the result of how the ring had turned out, she was overjoyed. With the proposed minor redesigning done to the ring, it looked even more beautiful than she had imagined, with the added diamonds giving it a new sparkle and shine. The customer then tried it on and it fit perfectly, feeling like it was made just for her.
