Planning a wedding involves many decisions, with one of the most significant being the choice of wedding jewellery. This jewellery not only symbolises the couple’s love and commitment but also complements the overall aesthetic of the wedding. Staying updated with the latest trends can help couples make informed choices that reflect their personal style and values. This article will explore the latest wedding jewellery trends, from timeless classics to modern innovations, ensuring every couple finds inspiration for their special day.

In this detailed guide, we will discuss classic and modern trends in wedding jewellery, the rise of custom and personalised pieces, eco-friendly and ethical choices, and unique statement pieces. We will also cover trends in men’s wedding jewellery, cultural influences, celebrity inspirations, and future predictions. By the end of this article, you’ll have a thorough understanding of the current landscape of wedding jewellery, helping you make choices that will stand the test of time.

Classic Trends

Traditional Diamond Rings

Diamond rings have long been a staple in wedding jewellery. The allure of a sparkling diamond, particularly in popular cuts such as round, princess, and emerald, continues to capture hearts. Traditional solitaire settings, which highlight the diamond’s brilliance, remain a favourite. However, halo settings, where smaller diamonds encircle the centre stone, are also gaining popularity for their added sparkle and grandeur.

Pearls

Pearls are synonymous with elegance and sophistication. They are a timeless choice for wedding jewellery, often seen in necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Modern interpretations of pearl jewellery include combining pearls with diamonds or incorporating them into contemporary designs. This blend of tradition and modernity makes pearls a versatile option for brides seeking classic elegance with a modern twist.

Modern Trends

Coloured Gemstones

Increasingly, couples are choosing coloured gemstones for their engagement rings and wedding bands. Sapphires, emeralds, and rubies offer vibrant alternatives to traditional diamonds. These gemstones can be the centrepiece of an engagement ring or used as accent stones to add a pop of colour. Matching gemstone wedding bands are also trending, allowing couples to express their unique style.

Rose Gold

Rose gold has become a popular choice for wedding jewellery due to its warm and romantic hue. This metal pairs beautifully with diamonds and coloured gemstones, making it a versatile option for engagement rings and wedding bands. The subtle blush tone of rose gold adds a contemporary touch to traditional designs, appealing to modern brides and grooms.

Custom and Personalized Pieces

Custom Engagement Rings

Designing a custom engagement ring allows couples to create a piece that reflects their personal style and love story. From choosing the perfect stone to selecting the setting and metal, the possibilities are endless. Custom rings often incorporate unique elements, such as engraving a special date or symbol, making the ring truly one-of-a-kind.

Engraved Wedding Bands

Engraving wedding bands is a meaningful way to personalise this significant piece of jewellery. Couples can choose to inscribe special dates, initials, or heartfelt messages on their rings. This subtle yet intimate detail adds a layer of sentimental value to the bands, creating a lasting reminder of their commitment.

Family Heirlooms and Vintage Styles

Incorporating family heirlooms into wedding jewellery is a trend that honours tradition and family heritage. Vintage styles, such as Art Deco or Victorian designs, are also popular. These pieces often feature intricate details and craftsmanship that add a touch of history and elegance to modern weddings.

Eco-friendly and Ethical Choices

Lab-grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are becoming a popular alternative to mined diamonds. They offer the same brilliance and durability but are often more affordable and environmentally friendly. Choosing lab-grown diamonds allows couples to enjoy the beauty of a diamond while making a conscious choice for the environment.

Recycled Metals

Using recycled metals in wedding jewellery is another way to make eco-friendly choices. Recycled gold and other metals reduce the demand for new mining and the associated environmental impact. This sustainable option is gaining traction among couples who prioritise ethical and environmental considerations.

Unique and Statement Pieces

Stackable Rings

Stackable rings provide a modern twist on traditional wedding jewellery. Couples can mix and match different rings to create a personalised look. This trend allows for flexibility, as rings can be added or rearranged over time, symbolising the evolving journey of a relationship.

Statement Earrings and Necklaces

Bold, statement pieces like earrings and necklaces are becoming popular choices for brides. These pieces can make a dramatic impact, complementing the wedding dress and overall look. Whether it’s a pair of chandelier earrings or a striking necklace, statement jewellery adds a touch of glamour to the wedding ensemble.

Men’s Wedding Jewellery Trends

Non-traditional Materials

Men’s wedding bands are no longer limited to traditional metals like gold and platinum. Materials such as tungsten, titanium, and wood are becoming popular for their unique look and durability. These alternatives offer a range of styles and finishes, catering to diverse tastes.

Custom and Unique Designs

Custom designs are also gaining popularity in men’s wedding bands. Engravings, custom finishes, and unique materials allow grooms to choose bands that reflect their personal style. These bespoke pieces often feature intricate details that make the ring a true reflection of the individual.

Matching Sets

Couples are increasingly opting for matching wedding bands that symbolise their unity. Coordinated designs, whether through matching metals, stones, or patterns, create a cohesive look. This trend is a beautiful way for couples to showcase their connection through their jewellery.

Cultural and Regional Influences

Indian Bridal Jewellery

Indian weddings are known for their elaborate and intricate jewellery. Traditional pieces like maang tikkas, nose rings, and bangles are integral to Indian bridal attire. These pieces often feature detailed craftsmanship and vibrant gemstones, reflecting the rich cultural heritage.

Western vs. Eastern

Trends

Western and Eastern wedding jewellery trends often differ in style and materials. Western designs tend to favour simplicity and elegance, while Eastern designs are more elaborate and colourful. However, there is a growing trend of blending these styles, creating fusion jewellery that incorporates elements from both traditions.

Fusion Trends

Fusion jewellery combines different cultural styles, offering a unique and personalised option for couples. This trend allows for creative expression, as couples can mix traditional elements with modern designs. The result is often a piece that is both meaningful and stylish.

Celebrity Influences

High-profile Weddings

Celebrity weddings often set trends in wedding jewellery. High-profile events, such as royal weddings or celebrity nuptials, showcase stunning jewellery that inspires couples worldwide. From intricate tiaras to dazzling engagement rings, these events highlight the latest trends and styles.

Influencer Impact

Social media influencers also play a significant role in shaping wedding jewellery trends. Influencers often share their jewellery choices and styles, providing inspiration for their followers. This influence extends to engagement rings, wedding bands, and other bridal jewellery, making it a crucial factor in trendsetting.

Future Predictions

Emerging Technologies

Innovations in jewellery design and manufacturing are continually emerging. Technologies such as 3D printing and computer-aided design (CAD) are revolutionising how jewellery is created. These advancements allow for more intricate and customised designs, catering to the evolving tastes of modern couples.

Shifting Preferences

As preferences shift, new trends are likely to emerge. There is an increasing focus on sustainability and ethical choices, with couples seeking jewellery that aligns with their values. Additionally, the demand for unique and personalised pieces is expected to grow, reflecting the desire for individuality.

Sustainability Trends

Sustainability will continue to be a significant trend in wedding jewellery. From lab-grown diamonds to recycled metals, eco-friendly options are becoming more mainstream. This focus on sustainability reflects a broader awareness and commitment to ethical practices in the jewellery industry.

Our Thoughts

Choosing wedding jewellery is a deeply personal and significant part of the wedding planning process. By staying informed about the latest trends and considering personal preferences and values, couples can select pieces that truly reflect their love and commitment. Whether opting for classic designs, modern innovations, or personalised creations, the right jewellery will enhance the beauty and meaning of the wedding day, creating lasting memories.

Jewellery holds a special place in our hearts, often carrying sentimental value and precious memories. However, styles change, and what was once a beloved piece can become outdated or worn. This article delves into the fascinating world of jewellery remodelling and restoration, offering insights into the creative possibilities, detailed processes, sustainable benefits, emotional value, and diverse ideas available to transform your treasured pieces into contemporary masterpieces.

Whether you have inherited a family heirloom or possess jewellery that no longer suits your taste, this guide will provide you with valuable information on how to breathe new life into your old pieces. From understanding the step-by-step process to exploring various remodelling ideas, you’ll discover how to create unique, meaningful jewellery that reflects your personal style and preserves cherished memories.

Creative Possibilities in Remodelling

Jewellery remodelling offers a myriad of creative possibilities, allowing you to transform old or unworn pieces into stunning new designs. One of the most exciting aspects of remodelling is the ability to repurpose existing materials and gemstones into something entirely new and unique.

Transformation Examples

Jewellery remodelling opens up a world of creative possibilities, allowing you to breathe new life into cherished pieces. By exploring various transformation concepts, you can find the perfect way to modernise your jewellery while preserving its sentimental value. Here are several groups of transformation ideas to consider:

Transforming Large, Ornate Pieces

Simplifying Complex Designs: Large, ornate pieces such as cocktail rings or statement necklaces can be simplified into more wearable, everyday items. For instance, a large ring can be broken down into smaller components to create a pair of elegant stud earrings and a minimalist band. This not only makes the jewellery more practical but also retains the beauty and value of the original gemstones and metals.

Example: Transforming a vintage brooch into multiple pieces, such as a pendant and matching earrings, can provide versatility while preserving the original aesthetic.

Combining Multiple Pieces

Creating Statement Pieces: Combining elements from multiple pieces of jewellery can result in a stunning statement piece. For example, merging diamonds from an engagement ring with gemstones from a family necklace can create a unique ring or pendant that tells a story and holds deep personal meaning.

Unified Designs: This approach is particularly useful for those with several smaller, less wearable items. By combining them into a single, cohesive design, you can create a bold new piece that stands out.

Example: Integrating stones from different rings into one elaborate cocktail ring or bangle, thus preserving the sentimental value of each original piece.

From 2 Rings to “3” Pendants

Here’s an example of what we’ve recently done for a customer who had 2 very old and worn out rings with multiple small diamonds with different sizes. She didn’t wanted something other than rings, so we agreed on the idea of creating a versatile 3 in 1 pendant for her. The great thing about this design is that the design is simple enough, but can still fit all of her diamonds in 1 piece. Best of all, the pendant can be worn in 3 different ways.

Updating Outdated Styles

Modernising Vintage Jewellery: Vintage jewellery often has intricate designs that may feel outdated. Remodelling allows you to modernise these pieces while keeping their essence. For example, a traditional Victorian ring can be redesigned with a sleeker band and contemporary setting, making it more suitable for today’s fashion.

Example: Converting an antique cameo brooch into a modern pendant or ring, thereby making it more versatile and wearable.

Repairing and Repurposing Damaged Items

Reviving Broken Jewellery: Damaged or worn-out jewellery doesn’t have to be discarded. Skilled jewellers can repair and repurpose these pieces, turning them into new creations. A broken necklace, for example, can be transformed into a bracelet and a pair of earrings.

Example: A snapped bracelet can be redesigned into a pair of hoop earrings, making use of the remaining materials without losing the original charm.

Merging and Consolidating Gemstones

Cluster Designs: If you have several smaller gemstones from different pieces, consider creating a cluster design. This can involve grouping the stones together in a new setting, such as a cluster ring or pendant, which can provide a striking visual impact.

Example: Combining small diamonds from multiple rings to create a stunning halo setting around a central gemstone, enhancing its brilliance and making a bold statement.

Transforming Family Heirlooms

Honouring Heritage: Family heirlooms carry significant emotional weight. Remodelling allows you to honour this heritage while adapting the piece to fit modern styles. For instance, an inherited ring can be redesigned to suit the personal taste of the current wearer, ensuring it remains a cherished item for future generations.

Example: Reworking a grandmother’s wedding ring into a modern engagement ring for a new generation, incorporating elements of the original design to maintain its legacy.

Creating Multi-Functional Pieces

Versatile Designs: Remodelling can also focus on creating versatile jewellery pieces that can be worn in multiple ways. For example, a long necklace can be redesigned to also function as a wrap bracelet or a multi-layered choker, providing different styling options.

Example: A necklace with detachable pendants that can be worn individually as charms on a bracelet or earrings, offering flexibility and variety in wear.

Modern Designs

Remodelling allows you to take outdated designs and give them a modern twist. For instance, you might rework a traditional engagement ring into a contemporary design that aligns with current fashion trends. This approach ensures that your jewellery remains stylish and relevant, while still retaining the sentimental value of the original piece.

Detailed Process and Personalisation

The process of jewellery remodelling is an intricate journey that combines creativity, craftsmanship, and personalisation to transform old or unworn pieces into new treasures. Here’s a closer look at each step involved in this detailed process:

1. Initial Consultation

The remodelling journey begins with an initial consultation. This meeting is crucial as it sets the foundation for the entire project. During this session, you will discuss your ideas, preferences, and the specific pieces you wish to remodel. This is an opportunity to share the history and sentimental value of your jewellery, which can significantly influence the design process.

Discussing Ideas and Preferences: You can bring inspiration, such as photos, sketches, or even other jewellery pieces that you admire. This helps the jeweller understand your aesthetic preferences and style.

Assessing the Jewellery: The jeweller will examine the pieces to determine their condition and the potential for remodelling. This assessment includes checking the integrity of the metals and gemstones and identifying any repairs that might be needed.

2. Design Development

Once the initial consultation is complete, the design development phase begins. This stage involves translating your ideas and preferences into tangible design concepts.

Sketching and Visualisation: The jeweller will create preliminary sketches to visualise different design possibilities. These sketches are often shared with you for feedback and adjustments.

Computer-Aided Design (CAD): Advanced jewellers use CAD technology to create detailed, realistic renderings of the proposed designs. This allows you to see a 3D model of the piece, providing a clear picture of how the final jewellery will look.

Material Selection: During this phase, decisions about materials are made. This includes choosing the type of metal (e.g., gold, platinum) and selecting any additional gemstones that might be needed to complete the design.

3. Securing Materials

In some cases, additional materials may be required to bring the design to life. This could involve sourcing new gemstones or metals that complement the existing pieces.

Ethical Sourcing: Reputable jewellers ensure that any additional materials are ethically sourced. This includes conflict-free diamonds and responsibly mined metals.

Matching Gemstones: If the design requires new gemstones, the jeweller will source stones that match the quality and appearance of the existing gems to maintain a cohesive look.

4. Obtaining a Quote

Before the crafting begins, a detailed quote is provided. This quote outlines the costs associated with the remodelling project, including any additional materials, labour, and other expenses.

Transparent Pricing: A good jeweller will provide a transparent, itemised quote that explains each cost component. This helps avoid any surprises and ensures that you understand the financial investment involved.

Adjustments: If the initial quote exceeds your budget, there may be options to adjust the design or materials to reduce costs while still achieving a beautiful result.

5. Approval and Final Design

Once you approve the design and quote, the final design phase begins. This stage involves fine-tuning the details and preparing for the actual crafting of the jewellery.

Final Adjustments: Any last-minute changes or adjustments are made to the design. This could include altering the placement of gemstones, changing the metal finish, or adjusting the size of the piece.

Design Approval: You will give the final approval before the crafting begins, ensuring that you are completely satisfied with the proposed design.

6. Crafting the Jewellery

The crafting phase is where the design comes to life. Skilled artisans work meticulously to transform the design into a tangible piece of jewellery.

Handcrafting: The jewellery is crafted by hand, using traditional techniques combined with modern technology. This ensures high-quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Setting Gemstones: Gemstones are carefully set into the piece, ensuring they are secure and well-aligned. This step requires precision to enhance the beauty and durability of the jewellery.

Finishing Touches: The final touches include polishing the metal to a high shine, ensuring all settings are secure, and making any necessary adjustments for fit and comfort.

7. Presentation and Follow-Up

Once the jewellery is crafted, it is presented to you for review. This is a moment of excitement as you see the transformation from old to new.

Final Inspection: You will inspect the finished piece to ensure it meets your expectations. Any minor adjustments can be made at this stage.

Aftercare and Maintenance: A good jeweller will provide guidance on how to care for your newly remodelled jewellery to ensure it lasts for many years. This might include advice on cleaning, storage, and periodic maintenance.

Consultation

The process begins with an initial consultation, where you discuss your ideas, preferences, and the pieces you wish to remodel. This step is crucial as it helps the jeweller understand your needs and offers an opportunity to explore various design possibilities. During this consultation, you can also discuss any specific requirements, such as maintaining the integrity of certain gemstones or incorporating elements from multiple pieces.

Design Development

Once the initial ideas have been discussed, the jeweller will start developing design concepts. This typically involves sketching out various designs and using computer-aided drawings to create realistic visualisations of the final piece. These sketches allow you to see how the remodelling will look and provide an opportunity to make any necessary adjustments before the crafting begins.

Craftsmanship

The actual crafting of the jewellery is a meticulous process that requires skilled artisans to bring the design to life. Using traditional techniques combined with modern technology, these artisans carefully remodel the existing materials, ensuring that the final piece meets the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship. Throughout this process, you will be kept informed and may even have the chance to see your jewellery being transformed.

Sustainability and Cost-Effectiveness

Jewellery remodelling is not only a creative and personal endeavour but also an environmentally friendly and cost-effective choice.

Eco-Friendly Approach

By repurposing existing materials and gemstones, remodelling reduces the need for new resources and minimises the environmental impact. This sustainable approach is particularly appealing to those who are conscious of their environmental footprint and prefer to make eco-friendly choices.

Cost Savings

Remodelling can also be more affordable than purchasing new jewellery. Since you are reusing existing materials, the costs associated with sourcing new gemstones and metals are significantly reduced. This makes remodelling an attractive option for those looking to refresh their jewellery collection without breaking the bank.

Emotional and Sentimental Value

One of the most compelling reasons to remodel jewellery is the emotional and sentimental value that it can preserve and enhance.

Preserving Memories

Jewellery often carries significant sentimental value, representing important life events, family heritage, or personal milestones. Remodelling allows you to retain these precious memories while updating the design to suit your current style. For example, transforming an old family ring into a new piece that you can wear every day keeps the memories alive and close to your heart.

Personal Connection

Remodelling provides a unique opportunity to create jewellery that is deeply personal and meaningful. By incorporating elements from different pieces, you can create a new design that tells a story and maintains a connection to the past. This personalised approach ensures that your jewellery is not only beautiful but also holds special significance.

Diverse Remodelling Ideas

The possibilities for remodelling jewellery are virtually endless, allowing you to explore a wide range of creative ideas.

Combining Elements

One popular approach is to combine gemstones from multiple pieces into a single new design. For example, you might merge the diamonds from an old engagement ring with gemstones from a family necklace to create a stunning new ring. This technique allows you to preserve the sentimental value of each piece while creating something entirely new and unique.

Transforming Multiple Pieces

Another option is to transform multiple outdated or broken pieces into a single, cohesive design. This could involve melting down old gold pieces to create a new ring or combining various gemstones into a statement necklace. This approach not only refreshes your jewellery collection but also ensures that no valuable materials go to waste.

Final Thoughts

Jewellery remodelling and restoration offer a wonderful way to breathe new life into old, unworn pieces. By exploring the creative possibilities, understanding the detailed process, and considering the sustainable and cost-effective benefits, you can transform your treasured jewellery into contemporary designs that reflect your personal style and preserve precious memories.

If you have jewellery that holds sentimental value but no longer suits your taste, consider remodelling as a way to create something new and meaningful. With the help of skilled artisans, you can turn your old pieces into timeless treasures that you will cherish for years to come.

When your big day is on the horizon, every detail counts, especially your bridal jewellery set. This piece isn’t just an accessory; it’s a cherishing touch that completes your look. Navigating the vibrant world of bridal jewellery in Australia can be thrilling yet overwhelming. But fret not! This guide is designed to walk you through selecting the ideal bridal jewellery set that complements not just your dress, but your personal style and the essence of your wedding day.

Whether you’re drawn to the timeless elegance of pearls or the sparkling allure of diamonds, understanding the components of a bridal jewellery set and how to choose one that’s just right for you is crucial. With the right information and a few expert tips, you’ll find picking your jewellery to be a delightful part of your wedding preparations.

Understanding Bridal Jewellery Sets

A typical bridal jewellery set in Australia includes earrings, a necklace, a bracelet, and sometimes a ring—each crafted to harmonise beautifully. The key to selecting the perfect set lies in understanding how these elements can enhance your overall wedding day look.

Earrings

The right earrings can frame your face and complement your hairstyle. Whether you opt for subtle studs or dramatic drops depends on your style and the neckline of your dress.

Necklace

The necklace should work with the cut of your dress’s neckline. A simple pendant works well with a high neckline, while a more detailed drop can dazzle with a sweetheart or plunge neckline.

Bracelet

A delicate bracelet can add just the right touch of glamour without overpowering your other jewellery.

Ring

Besides your wedding and engagement rings, consider whether an additional decorative ring will enhance or clutter your look.

How to Choose the Right Bridal Jewellery

Selecting the right bridal jewellery set involves more than just matching it to your dress; it needs to fit the venue, comfort level, and the look and feel of your wedding.

Match Your Wedding Theme and Dress Style: Consider the overall theme of your wedding. Is it a beach wedding, a formal ballroom event, or a casual garden party? The style of your jewellery should echo the vibe of your wedding.

Comfort and Wearability

Remember, you’ll be wearing these pieces all day. Choose jewellery that won’t only look beautiful but also feel comfortable.

Popular Styles of Bridal Jewellery Sets

Classic Elegance

Think pearls and diamonds—jewellery that will never go out of style and can be passed down through generations.

Modern Chic

For the contemporary bride, consider minimalist designs or pieces that feature modern artistry like asymmetrical forms and mixed metals.

Vintage Glamour: If your style leans towards the nostalgic, look for antique-inspired designs that reflect the sophistication of bygone eras.

Customisation Options | Custom Made Bridal Jewellery Sets

Choosing your bridal jewellery is a personal journey, and customising it adds an even more intimate touch to your wedding ensemble. Here are some materials, meanings, and ideas for customising your bridal jewellery set, ensuring it perfectly reflects your personal style and the significance of your big day.

Materials and Their Meanings

Gold

Gold is a classic choice that symbolises wealth and warmth. Available in yellow, white, and rose shades, each brings its own unique vibe to your bridal look.

Silver

Known for its bright, versatile finish, silver is a popular choice for those who prefer a sleek, modern look.

Platinum

This rare metal is incredibly durable and pure, making it a symbol of enduring love.

Gemstones

Beyond diamonds, consider incorporating birthstones or other gemstones that hold special meaning for you or your relationship.

Ideas for Customisation

Engravings

Personalise your jewellery with engravings of your wedding date, initials, or a special quote that holds significance in your relationship.

Design Motifs

Incorporate unique design elements such as the lace pattern from your wedding dress or symbols that represent your heritage.

Matching Sets

Design a cohesive set where each piece—earrings, necklace, and bracelet—complements each other, creating a harmonious look.

Family Heirlooms

Integrate stones or parts of jewellery passed down through your family to add historical significance and continuity.

Ideal Timeline for Purchasing Your Bridal Jewellery

When it comes to preparing for your wedding day, timing is everything, especially for something as important as your bridal jewellery. If you’re considering custom-made pieces, it’s crucial to allow enough time for the design and creation process to ensure your jewellery is just as you envision it. Here’s a guideline to help you plan when to start looking at and purchasing your bridal jewellery:

Start Early (6-12 Months Before the Wedding)

Begin browsing for bridal jewellery soon after you’ve chosen your wedding dress. If you decide on a custom design, starting early allows ample time for consultations with jewellers, exploring different designs, and making decisions without feeling rushed.

Design and Quotation Phase (5-8 Months Before)

During this period, discuss your vision with the jeweller, choose materials, and finalize the design. This is also the time to get quotes and adjust elements to fit your budget.

Production Phase (3-6 Months Before)

Custom pieces can take several months to create, depending on the complexity and the jeweller’s schedule. Starting the production at least 3 to 6 months before the wedding ensures that there is enough time for meticulous craftsmanship.

Review and Adjustments (2-3 Months Before)

Once the initial version of your jewellery is ready, review it to make sure it meets your expectations. If any adjustments are needed, this window allows time to refine the pieces.

Final Fitting (1-2 Months Before)

Have a final fitting with your jewellery and wedding dress to see how they complement each other. This also provides a cushion for any last-minute tweaks.

Pickup (1 Month Before)

Aim to have your jewellery in hand at least one month before the wedding. This gives you peace of mind and one less thing to worry about as your big day approaches.

Why Timing Matters

Starting early not only gives you the advantage of a stress-free process but also ensures that you have the jewellery of your dreams to wear on your special day. Custom jewellery is not just about creating something unique; it’s also about the experience of seeing your vision come to life. By planning the timeline carefully, you ensure that each step of the process is enjoyable and that the final products are exactly what you wanted.

Maintenance Tips for Bridal Jewellery

To keep your bridal jewellery looking as splendid as on your wedding day, store it in a dry place and clean it regularly with products suited for the materials.

In our previous exploration, we delved into the fascinating world of gemstone cutting, uncovering the techniques and styles that transform raw stones into the sparkling jewels that adorn our favourite pieces of jewellery. From the precision of The 3 Basic Cuts to the timeless elegance of Vintage Cuts and the innovative flair of Modern Innovations, we’ve journeyed through the meticulous artistry that shapes these treasures of the earth.

Building on that foundation, this article continues our exploration into the captivating realm of gemstone cutting. We’ll dive deeper into the nuanced considerations that influence the choice of cut, revealing how these decisions impact the final beauty and value of the gemstones. Additionally, we’ll uncover the significant role gemstone cutting plays in jewellery design, shaping not just the aesthetic appeal but also dictating the overall style and feel of the jewellery piece.

Join us as we further unravel the mysteries behind the cuts that give gemstones their brilliance and allure, enhancing your understanding and appreciation of the intricate craftsmanship behind your beloved jewellery.

Considerations in Gem Cutting

In the meticulous world of gemstone cutting, a multitude of factors come into play, each critical in shaping the final masterpiece. This section delves into the essential considerations that gemstone cutters must navigate to transform raw stones into breathtaking jewels.

Material Properties

Every gemstone possesses unique physical and chemical properties that significantly impact how they should be cut. Understanding these properties is crucial to prevent damage during the cutting process. For example, some gems are softer or more prone to cleavage and require more delicate handling. The cutter must choose a cut that complements the gemstone’s inherent characteristics, ensuring durability and enhancing its natural beauty without causing harm.

Colour and Transparency

The colour and transparency of a gemstone can dramatically affect its appeal and value. Strategic cutting can enhance or diminish these qualities. A skilled cutter will evaluate the best way to cut the stone to intensify its colour and maximise its transparency, thereby elevating its allure and worth. This may involve determining the ideal angle and depth of the cut to allow optimal light passage, enhancing the stone’s intrinsic hues and clarity.

Size and Shape of Rough

The original size and shape of the rough gemstone are pivotal in determining the final cut. Cutters aim to maximise both the aesthetic appeal and market value of the stone while minimising waste. This involves a careful assessment of the rough’s potential to determine the most suitable shape and size that can be extracted from it, ensuring that the final gem retains as much weight and substance as possible without compromising on quality or beauty.

Inclusions and Flaws

Inclusions and flaws within a gemstone can significantly impact its final appearance and value. Skillful cutting can hide or minimise these imperfections, enhancing the stone’s clarity and appeal. Cutters must strategically plan the cut to place inclusions in less visible locations or utilise faceting techniques to disguise them. This delicate balance between maintaining size and improving aesthetics is a testament to a cutter’s precision and expertise.

Market Trends and Customer Preferences

Trends in the gemstone market and individual customer preferences play a significant role in the cutting process. Cutters must stay abreast of current demands and style inclinations, ensuring their creations meet contemporary tastes while still appealing to individual buyers. This could mean adapting cuts to suit popular trends or tailoring them to meet specific customer desires, balancing marketability with personalisation.

Symmetry and Proportion

Precision in symmetry and proportion is essential for the optimal appearance and performance of a gemstone. Even the slightest deviation can detract from the stone’s brilliance and overall balance. Cutters must meticulously plan and execute the cut to ensure that each facet aligns perfectly with others, resulting in a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing final product.

Polishing Techniques

The choice of polishing techniques can significantly affect the quality of the finished gemstone. Different stones may require different abrasives or approaches to achieve a smooth, reflective surface. A cutter’s selection of polishing methods must align with the gemstone’s characteristics to enhance its lustre without causing damage.

Waste Minimisation

In gemstone cutting, the balance between achieving aesthetic excellence and minimising material waste is paramount. Cutters strive to extract the maximum beauty from a stone while conservatively managing the raw material. This not only respects the preciousness of the gemstone but also adheres to sustainable practices.

Tool and Equipment Choice

The selection of tools and equipment is critical to the cutting process, ensuring precision and avoiding unnecessary damage to the gemstone. From saws to lasers, each tool must be chosen based on the gemstone’s properties and the desired outcome, ensuring clean cuts and minimal loss.

Ethical Considerations

Ethical considerations in gemstone cutting encompass sourcing, labour practices, and environmental impact. Cutters and jewellers must ensure that their gems are sourced responsibly, cut under fair labour conditions, and produced with minimal environmental degradation, reflecting a commitment to ethical standards in the jewellery industry.

Each of these considerations forms the backbone of the gemstone cutting process, guiding cutters as they transform raw, earth-born treasures into symbols of beauty and elegance. Through a deep understanding of these factors, gemstone cutters ensure that each stone reaches its highest potential, captivating the world with its splendour.

The Role of Gem Cutting in Jewellery Design: Shaping Aesthetic and Value

Gemstone cutting transcends mere shaping, profoundly influencing jewellery design and enhancing the value of each piece. This exploration reveals the integral relationship between cutting techniques and the aesthetic, individuality, and market appeal of jewellery.

Integration with Jewellery Setting

The cut of a gemstone significantly complements and enriches the overall design of a jewellery piece. An impeccable cut not only harmonises with the jewellery’s setting but also amplifies its beauty, leading to a cohesive and appealing design. For example, a brilliantly cut diamond can accentuate the sparkle and sophistication of a minimalist setting, making the gemstone the focal point. The gemstone cutter and jeweller must collaborate closely, considering the metal, setting style, and wearability to ensure the cut enhances the jewellery’s overall allure.

Enhancing Gemstone Colour and Clarity

A gemstone’s cut is pivotal in highlighting or concealing its natural colours and clarity. Proper faceting optimises light reflection within the stone, intensifying its colour and brilliance. For coloured gems, cuts like the emerald cut can deepen and enrich the perceived colour, enhancing the stone’s vibrancy. In diamonds, a meticulously planned cut can significantly improve clarity and sparkle, rendering inclusions less visible and elevating the stone’s appeal. The cutter’s expertise in accentuating the gemstone’s innate qualities can elevate a standard stone to a spectacular one, enhancing the jewellery’s final presentation.

Customisation and Personalisation

Customisation and personalisation are highly valued in contemporary markets. Unique cuts allow for personal expression and distinctiveness, setting jewellery pieces apart. Gemstone cutters can tailor cuts to individual preferences or conceptual designs, adding a personal touch that enhances significance and emotional value. This level of personalisation not only makes the jewellery unique but also caters to individual styles, offering limitless opportunities for creativity and expression in jewellery making.

Value Addition and Marketing

An expertly executed cut substantially increases a gemstone’s market value and desirability. The craftsmanship involved in a well-cut gemstone contributes to its brilliance, symmetry, and overall appearance, crucial factors in its market evaluation. Expertly cut gemstones fetch higher prices, reflecting their superior beauty and the craftsmanship they embody. Furthermore, a beautifully cut gemstone serves as a significant marketing tool, drawing attention and distinguishing it from lower-quality counterparts. The allure of a well-cut stone can captivate potential customers, making it a cornerstone in marketing strategies and enhancing the jewellery’s market success.

Through meticulous cutting techniques, gemstones are transformed into enthralling works of art that embody elegance, personal expression, and enhanced value, profoundly impacting the design and appeal of jewellery pieces.

Final Thoughts

Gemstone cutting is not just a technical process; it’s an art form that intricately shapes the aesthetic and value of jewellery. Through integration with jewellery settings, enhancement of gemstone attributes, customisation, and value addition, gemstone cutting plays a pivotal role in creating pieces that are not only visually stunning but also hold personal significance and market appeal.

As we’ve explored, each facet of gemstone cutting—from selecting the perfect cut to enhancing colour and clarity—contributes to the overall beauty and desirability of jewellery. Whether it’s a brilliantly cut diamond stealing the spotlight in a minimalist setting or a custom-cut gemstone reflecting individual style, the craftsmanship and attention to detail in gemstone cutting elevate each piece to a work of art.

Gemstone cutting, an art that dates back thousands of years, remains at the heart of the jewellery industry, transforming raw, earth-crafted minerals into stunning jewels that captivate the eye and heart. This meticulous process, performed by skilled lapidarists, involves cutting and polishing stones to reveal their hidden beauty and brilliance. The journey from a rough gem to a sparkling masterpiece is complex and nuanced, relying on a deep understanding of the stone’s physical and chemical properties. Each cut is a delicate balance between the gem’s natural characteristics and the artisan’s vision, aiming to enhance the stone’s colour, clarity, and luminosity while minimising flaws. The importance of gemstone cutting extends beyond aesthetics; it is crucial for maximising the gemstone’s value and appeal, making it an indispensable element in the creation of fine jewellery.

The evolution of gemstone cutting reflects a blend of tradition, innovation, and artistry. From ancient techniques to modern precision cuts, the lapidary’s craft has continuously adapted to incorporate new technologies and styles while preserving the timeless allure of natural stones. The choice of cut is influenced by various factors, including the gemstone’s type, intended use, and the latest fashion trends. As such, gemstone cutting is more than a technical skill; it is a form of expression that contributes significantly to the design and overall impact of jewellery. In this context, understanding the intricacies of gemstone cutting not only enhances our appreciation of jewellery but also allows for a greater understanding of the cultural and historical significance of these precious stones.

Gemstone Cutting: Five Steps to a Perfect Cut

Firstly, let’s delve into the fascinating world of gemstone cutting, a meticulous process that transforms rough stones into dazzling beauties. Each step is crucial and requires precision and care.

Handling the Rough

Our journey starts with the rough gemstone, a hidden treasure waiting to reveal its beauty. The cutter must inspect the stone, assessing its size, shape, and potential flaws. This initial examination is vital, as it determines the stone’s future. The aim here is not just to uncover the gem’s potential but to envision the sparkling jewel it will become.

Planning the Cut

Next, we move on to planning, a stage where foresight meets creativity. The lapidarist decides on the gem’s final shape, considering how to best showcase its colour, minimise imperfections, and maximise size. This step is like mapping out a path, ensuring the journey will lead to the most luminous destination.

Pre-Shaping and Dopping

Now, it’s time for pre-shaping, where the rough stone begins to take form. The cutter shapes the gem against a spinning wheel, gradually revealing the outline of the future jewel. Then, the stone is attached to a dop stick, ensuring stability for the intricate work ahead. This is a pivotal moment, setting the stage for the precision and artistry that follows.

Faceting

The heart of the process, faceting, is where the true magic happens. The cutter grinds tiny, flat surfaces onto the stone, creating a symphony of angles and planes. Each facet must be carefully aligned to reflect light, enhancing the gem’s natural brilliance. This step requires patience and precision, as the cutter crafts a masterpiece of light and shadow.

Polishing

Finally, we reach the polishing stage, where the gem achieves its full splendour. Using finer abrasives, the cutter polishes each facet to a mirror-like finish, unlocking the stone’s radiant glow. This last step is a testament to the cutter’s skill and dedication, culminating in a gemstone that sparkles with life.

Gem Cutting Styles and Techniques

The 3 Basic Cuts

Brilliant Cut

The brilliant cut is perhaps the most popular style for diamonds and other transparent gems, renowned for its ability to maximise light return. With typically 58 facets, this cut is engineered to enhance the stone’s internal fire, brilliance, and scintillation. The geometry is designed to reflect the maximum amount of light, making the gem appear more luminous and vibrant. This cut is ideal for those who seek the ultimate sparkle in their jewellery, as it brings out the gem’s best qualities.

Step Cut

The step cut is a more understated and elegant approach to gemstone cutting, characterised by its clean, rectilinear or square facets that descend from the gem’s table like the steps of a staircase. This cut emphasises the clarity, colour, and lustrous materials of the gemstone rather than its sparkle. It is particularly favoured for stones like emeralds, where clarity is prized over brilliance. The step cut offers a different kind of beauty, one that is measured and serene, making it perfect for those who appreciate a more subtle sophistication in their jewellery.

Mixed Cut

The mixed cut combines elements of both the brilliant and step cuts to create a style that balances the sparkle of the brilliant facets with the depth and clarity of the step facets. This technique allows lapidarists to tailor the cut to the specific gemstone, enhancing its best features while minimising any imperfections. The mixed cut can offer the best of both worlds, providing depth and complexity to the appearance of the gem, making it an excellent choice for those who desire versatility and uniqueness in their jewellery.

Vintage Cuts

Rose Cut

The rose cut is a nod to the history of gemstone cutting, featuring a flat bottom and a domed top covered in triangular facets that resemble the petals of a rose. This cut maximises the perceived surface area of the gem, giving it a larger, more substantial appearance without the added weight. The rose cut is perfect for those who love vintage charm and want a piece of jewellery that reflects historical beauty and romanticism. Its subtle sparkle and unique profile make it a timeless choice for antique-inspired pieces.

Old Mine Cut

The old mine cut dates back to the 18th century and is considered the precursor to modern diamond cuts. Characterised by a squarish shape with rounded corners, it combines a high crown, a small table, and a large, flat culet, creating a distinctive, soft sparkle reminiscent of candlelight. This cut is ideal for those who are drawn to the allure and nostalgia of vintage jewellery, offering a connection to the past and a sense of enduring elegance.

Old European Cut

The old European cut is the forerunner of today’s modern round brilliant cut but with its own unique characteristics, such as a higher crown, smaller table, and more pronounced culet. This cut was widely used during the 19th and early 20th centuries and is cherished for its historical significance and romantic appeal. The old European cut is perfect for those who appreciate the craftsmanship and aesthetics of bygone eras, providing a bridge between traditional and contemporary styles.

The Barion cut is a modern innovation that marries the brilliance of the standard round cut with the depth of the step cut, resulting in a captivating blend of light and shadow. This cut is known for its intricate faceting and exceptional light performance, making the gem appear both fiery and deep. It’s an excellent choice for those seeking a cut that combines traditional elegance with contemporary flair, offering a sophisticated and unique aesthetic.

Princess Cut

The princess cut is a modern classic, beloved for its sharp angles and contemporary lines. Introduced in the 1980s, this cut is second in popularity only to the round brilliant and is designed to maximise sparkle while maintaining a chic, square shape. The princess cut is perfect for those who seek a modern, fashionable look without sacrificing brilliance and fire. It’s well-suited to a variety of jewellery settings and styles, making it versatile and timeless.

This cut has been popular for over a century and is known for its ability to reflect light in a chunky, romantic pattern. The cushion cut is ideal for those who love the softness of vintage styles but want the performance of a modern cut, providing a luxurious and romantic feel to any piece of jewellery.

Cabochon Cut

Cabochon

The cabochon cut is one of the oldest and simplest cutting styles, characterised by a polished, smooth dome without facets. This cut highlights the natural beauty, colour, and texture of opaque or translucent gemstones, such as opals, moonstones, and turquoise. The absence of facets allows for a larger surface area, showcasing the stone’s intrinsic qualities and natural phenomena, such as star effects or cat’s eye. The cabochon cut is perfect for those who appreciate the organic, unadulterated beauty of gemstones, offering a timeless and classic appeal.

Named Cuts

Portuguese Cut

The intricate faceting requires exceptional skill, making each Portuguese cut gem a masterpiece of craftsmanship. This cut is perfect for those who desire an eye-catching piece that stands out with unparalleled sparkle and a rich, layered appearance.

Its unique structure is designed to draw the eye into the gem, highlighting its clarity and depth. The Asscher cut has gained popularity for its sophisticated, vintage appeal, offering a blend of timeless elegance and modern symmetry. It’s ideal for those who appreciate geometric shapes and a distinctive, almost architectural look in their jewellery.

Heart Cut

The heart cut is the ultimate symbol of love and romance, making it a popular choice for engagement rings and romantic gifts. This cut requires great precision to create the symmetrical lobes and sharp cleft that define the iconic heart shape. The complexity of the cut enhances the gem’s sparkle and colour, making it a captivating choice for those wanting to express their affection or commemorate a special moment. The heart cut is a testament to the cutter’s skill and passion, embodying both the emotional and physical beauty of the gemstone.

This cut is designed to maximise the gem’s brilliance and fire, making it an excellent option for those seeking a modern, edgy look. The Trilliant cut is versatile, serving as a stunning centrepiece or a complementary side stone, and is perfect for individuals who favour bold, contemporary designs that make a statement.

Originating from the French royal court, this cut is steeped in history and elegance, ideal for those who seek a touch of aristocratic charm. The Marquise cut’s unique geometry also helps elongate the finger, making it a flattering choice for engagement rings and other statement pieces.

The Pear cut is particularly favoured for its ability to create an illusion of length and slimness, ideal for pendants and earrings as well as beautiful, unique engagement rings.

Pink diamonds, like a delicate blush or the bloom of a cherry blossom, hold a unique fascination in the world of jewellery. Their exquisite charm, rarity, and timeless appeal make them a dream for jewellery enthusiasts. Let’s take a closer look at the world of pink diamonds, from their origin and various shades to famous instances in pop culture and the rising trend of pink diamond engagement rings.

The Elegance of Pink Diamonds

Pink diamonds are nature’s remarkable creations, offering a captivating hue that has captured the hearts of jewellery enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. To truly appreciate these exquisite gems, it’s essential to explore their history and origin, particularly the Argyle Pink Diamond, which has a unique connection to the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

A Natural Marvel in Western Australia: The Argyle Pink Diamond

The story of pink diamonds begins deep within the Earth’s crust, where they form under immense pressure and high temperatures. The Kimberley region of Western Australia, a remote and rugged landscape, has emerged as one of the world’s most renowned sources of these mesmerising gems.

The Argyle Pink Diamond, in particular, takes the spotlight in the world of pink diamonds. Sourced from the Argyle Diamond Mine in the Kimberley, these diamonds are celebrated for their intense pink hues and their limited availability. The Argyle Mine has been a cornerstone in the pink diamond industry, consistently providing a significant portion of the world’s pink diamond supply.

However, the story of the Argyle Pink Diamond is bittersweet. The Argyle Mine, responsible for introducing these beautiful gems to the world, ceased its operations in 2020. This closure marked the end of an era, making Argyle Pink Diamonds even more valuable and sought after. The scarcity of new supplies has elevated the appeal of these gems, solidifying their status as rare and precious treasures.

As a testament to their significance, Argyle Pink Diamonds have been celebrated in the world of fashion, film, and royalty. Their appeal goes beyond their stunning beauty; they represent a connection to the natural wonders of Western Australia and a deep appreciation for the mysteries of the Earth. These gems, whether set in jewellery or kept as collector’s items, carry with them the enchantment of their origin and the unique history of the Kimberley region.

In a world where every gem tells a story, pink diamonds stand out as natural marvels, shaped by the Kimberley’s timeless landscapes and born from the Earth’s most extraordinary processes. Their captivating hues reflect the enduring beauty and mystique of Western Australia, making them truly remarkable jewels in the world of fine jewellery.

How to Choose the Perfect Pink Diamond jewellery

Choosing the perfect pink diamond jewellery piece is a delightful experience. Whether you’re searching for a mesmerising pink diamond ring or a pair of enchanting pink diamond earrings, a few considerations can guide your decision. The 4 Cs—Colour, Cut, Clarity, and Carat—play a pivotal role in determining a pink diamond’s quality. Your choice of jewellery setting, be it a pendant, necklace, ring, or earrings, adds a personal touch to your piece. It’s crucial to select a setting that complements the diamond’s hue and your style, ensuring your jewellery is a true reflection of you.

The Various Shades of Pink Diamonds

When it comes to pink diamonds, one of the most intriguing aspects is the breathtaking variety of shades they can exhibit. These alluring gems span a spectrum of colours that range from the delicate and subtle to the intense and vibrant. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the world’s foremost authority on gemstones, has officially classified pink diamonds into specific colour grades to help us appreciate their enchanting hues. Let’s delve into some of the official terms for the shades of pink diamonds according to GIA:

Faint Pink

As the name suggests, faint pink diamonds have a subtle blush. They offer a delicate touch of pink that can be perfect for those who appreciate understated elegance.

Very Light Pink

These diamonds have a slightly stronger pink hue compared to faint pink diamonds. The colour is still quite soft and elegant, making them a beautiful choice for those who prefer a gentle touch of colour.

Light Pink

Light pink diamonds are a step up in colour intensity, displaying a more noticeable pink hue while retaining a sense of subtlety. Their colour is gentle yet captivating.

Fancy Light Pink

The term “fancy” indicates that the pink in these diamonds is more than just a hint; it’s a prominent feature. Fancy light pink diamonds are vibrant and eye-catching without being overly intense, making them a popular choice for those who desire a touch of colour with elegance.

Fancy Pink

As the pink hue intensifies, so does the enchantment of these diamonds. Fancy pink diamonds are vivid and striking, showcasing a noticeable pink hue that exudes charm and sophistication.

Fancy Intense Pink

Fancy intense pink diamonds take the pink saturation up a notch. They are a striking and vibrant shade, making them a favourite among those who want their jewellery to make a statement.

Fancy Vivid Pink

These are the crowning jewels of the pink diamond world. Fancy vivid pink diamonds are known for their extraordinarily intense and deep pink colour. Their brilliance and allure are unparalleled, often making them the centrepiece of rare and exquisite jewellery pieces.

Fancy Deep Pink

While not as intense as fancy vivid pink, fancy deep pink diamonds are still rich and captivating in colour. Their hue is deep and alluring, offering a sense of luxury and sophistication.

Fancy Dark Pink

The darkest of pink diamonds, these gems possess an almost magenta-like hue. They are captivating, making a bold statement that is hard to miss.

Understanding these official colour grades according to GIA is essential when choosing your perfect pink diamond jewellery. The colour intensity of your pink diamond, combined with the other factors like cut, clarity, and carat, determines the overall beauty and value of your piece.

Whether you’re drawn to the soft elegance of faint pink diamonds or the vibrant allure of fancy vivid pink diamonds, the world of pink diamonds is vast and enchanting. Your choice ultimately depends on your personal style and the statement you wish to make. Whichever shade you choose, your pink diamond jewellery will undoubtedly be a reflection of your individuality and a celebration of the beauty of nature.

Gillian’s Jewellery is a renowned jewellery store based in Forest Hill amongst the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. One of our specialties is in buying and selling second-hand jewellery, offering a treasure trove of vintage, antique, and mourning jewellery in Melbourne. In this comprehensive post, we will explore the captivating world of these exquisite pieces, from their defining characteristics to their historical significance. We invite you to delve into the elegance and allure of second-hand jewellery.

Vintage Jewellery

Vintage jewellery represents a unique era in design and craftsmanship, characterised by its timeless appeal and distinct features. Typically, vintage jewellery refers to pieces that are between 20 and 100 years old. The defining characteristics of vintage jewellery include a blend of traditional and modern designs, intricate details, and high-quality materials. It showcases the artistic styles that were popular during specific time periods, such as the Art Deco movement of the 1920s and 1930s or the Mid-Century Modern styles of the 1950s and 1960s.

During the Art Deco era, geometric shapes, bold colours, and a focus on symmetry dominated the design aesthetic. Vintage Art Deco rings, for example, often feature vibrant gemstones set in platinum or white gold, accompanied by intricate filigree or engraved details. On the other hand, Mid-Century Modern pieces embrace a more streamlined and minimalist approach, with clean lines, organic shapes, and innovative use of materials like colourful gemstones and textured gold.

Vintage jewellery holds a special appeal for collectors and fashion enthusiasts alike. These pieces offer a sense of nostalgia, reflecting the aesthetics and trends of the past. Moreover, vintage jewellery often boasts exceptional craftsmanship and materials that may be challenging to find in modern counterparts. The value of vintage jewellery is not solely monetary but also lies in the stories and history attached to each piece.

Antique Jewellery

Antique jewellery transports us to bygone eras, each with its own signature styles and materials. Generally, antique jewellery refers to pieces that are over 100 years old. Antique jewellery is admired for its craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the use of precious materials. This category encompasses various historical periods, including Georgian (1714-1837), Victorian (1837-1901), and Edwardian (1901-1910).

Georgian jewellery showcases the elegance of the 18th and early 19th centuries, characterised by intricate metalwork, delicate engravings, and the use of gemstones like diamonds, garnets, and pearls. Victorian jewellery, influenced by the reign of Queen Victoria, displays a wide range of styles, including Romantic, Gothic, and Art Nouveau. Victorian pieces often feature sentimental motifs, such as hearts, flowers, and snakes, and popular materials like cameos, lockets, and hairwork.

Edwardian jewellery, reflecting the refined and opulent aesthetic of the early 20th century, is known for its delicate filigree, intricate lace-like designs, and the use of platinum. The era introduced garland-style necklaces, tiaras, and diamond-studded pieces inspired by the Belle Époque. Antique jewellery holds immense value and is highly sought after by collectors, not only for its rarity but also for the historical and cultural significance it carries.

Mourning Jewellery

Mourning jewellery holds a unique place in history, serving as a tangible representation of grief and remembrance. It gained popularity during the Victorian era when wearing mourning attire and jewellery became a social custom following the death of a loved one. Mourning jewellery was created using materials and designs specifically associated with mourning, allowing individuals to express their sorrow publicly.

Symbolism and characteristics play a significant role in mourning jewellery. Pieces often incorporate black enamel, known as “enamel of sorrow,” as well as materials like jet, onyx, or vulcanite. Lockets and rings with compartments for hair lockets were prevalent, allowing the wearer to keep a physical memento of the deceased. Elaborate designs, including motifs like weeping willows, urns, and angels, conveyed mourning sentiments.

Mourning jewellery served as a powerful way for individuals to cope with loss, remember their loved ones, and communicate their grief to others. It became a visible and personal expression of mourning, with styles evolving over time to incorporate changing cultural practices and sentiments.

This is part 3 of the Stone Setting series, we would like to provide some suggestions on different stone setting techniques and what we usually recommend to our clients. Stone setting is a crucial aspect of jewellery design, as it not only enhances the beauty of the gemstone but also ensures its security. In this article, we will discuss two popular stone setting methods: claw setting (also known as prong setting) and rub-over setting (also known as bezel setting).

Claw Set (Prong Setting)

Claw setting is a popular type of gemstone setting that offers many benefits over other types of settings. It is perfect for turning into rings, earrings, pendants and brooches. The claws are basically made with metal prongs that hold the gemstone in place. They can be shaped in different ways to create different looks and styles. Claw setting is commonly used for round stones, and it offers various advantages depending on the number of claws used.

One of the main benefits of claw settings is that they allow more light to enter the stone and reflect back out, making it appear brighter and more brilliant. They also allow for more of the stone to be visible, which is especially important for faceted stones. The number of claws used in a claw setting can vary depending on the size and shape of the stone. For smaller stones, 4 claws may be sufficient to hold the stone securely in place. However, for larger stones, 6 or 8 claws may be necessary to provide adequate support and stability.

Number of Claws

6 Claws vs 4 Claws

Using 6 claws to hold a stone creates an illusion of a larger gem. The additional claws provide more visibility of the stone’s surface, allowing it to sparkle from multiple angles. A setting with six claws offers enhanced safety for the stone. In case one of the claws gets damaged, the remaining five still provide stability, reducing the risk of the stone falling out.

Changes the looks of the stone shape

On the other hand, opting for 4 claws gives the stone a square-shaped appearance. This setting can be visually appealing for individuals who prefer a more symmetrical look. However, there are some safety considerations that we recommend our customers to have a think about before deciding to use a 4 claws setting.

Balancing Looks and Safety

Unless there is a specific reason to choose four claws, it is generally advisable to opt for 6 claws. While four claws may offer a distinct aesthetic appeal, six claws provide greater security and peace of mind.

Compared to 6 claws, a setting with only 4 claws may be slightly less secure when it comes to potential damages to claws. Basically, if one of the four claws gets damaged, the stone becomes more susceptible to dislodging.

Rub-Over Setting (or Bezel Setting)

Rubover setting is a type of gemstone setting that places the gemstone in a circle of metal, which is then folded all around it to catch the hips of the gem at its widest point and lock it in place. When complete, the stone is surrounded by metal, creating a halo effect. It is also known as a bezel setting or rubbed-over setting.

The Rubover setting holds the diamond in place within a continuous edge of metal. This can be cast or hand-made and most sizes and shapes of diamond can be set in this way. It is probably less popular for retailers or mass manufacturers but more for custom handmade jewellery because diamond size needs to be precise, and there is far less tolerance for pre-designed settings. This is especially true where fancy shapes are concerned.

Illusion of Size

Rub-over setting can create an illusion of a larger stone due to the metal rim surrounding it. This effect enhances the perceived size of the gem, making it visually impressive.

Heavier Look

This setting technique gives the jewellery a substantial and luxurious appearance. The metal rim adds weight and presence to the overall design, making it visually appealing.

Comfort and Safety

Rub-over setting offers enhanced comfort for the wearer. With no protruding claws, there is no risk of accidentally catching or snagging the jewellery on clothing or other objects.

Additionally, the metal rim provides a secure and stable setting, reducing the chances of the stone becoming loose or falling out.

Professional Designs and Recommendations

As professionals, we strive to provide the best designs and recommendations for our clients. Here are our specific recommendations based on the stone’s shape:

Marquise, Heart-shaped, Pear-shaped, and Princess-cut Stones

These stone shapes have corners that require extra protection. Therefore, we recommend a corner claw setting for these stones.

Corner claw setting offers improved safety and sturdiness, ensuring better protection for the stone. Other claw settings may pose a higher risk of chipping the stone, particularly at the corners.

How to choose the right stone setting for your jewellery

There are a few things to consider when choosing the right stone setting for your jewellery.

Stone Type

Some gemstones are more fragile than others, and you will need to choose a setting that will protect them from damage. For example, diamonds are very hard and can be set in a variety of settings, but opals are more fragile and should be set in a setting that will protect them from shock.

Stone Shape

As we mentioned on the Diamond: How To Choose One post, there are a lot of different shapes of diamond, it works very similarly with any other gemstones. It all depends on personal preference. Some gemstones are more suited to certain settings than others. For example, round diamonds are often set in claw settings, while cabochon-shaped stones are often set in bezel settings.

Stone Size

Stone size is also another consideration, not just the actual size, but the way we set the stone would affect how big they look as well. This will be discussed in another post. Larger stones will usually need a setting that is strong enough to support their weight. For example, a large diamond ring will need a setting that is made from a strong metal, such as gold or platinum.

Look and Feel

Needless to say, personal preference on the look and feel of the whole piece, especially custom handmade jewellery, is a huge factor for consideration. Some settings can look more formal than others. So how you want your handmade jewellery look sometimes depends on the purpose of that piece. For example, a prong setting is a classic and elegant setting, while a pave setting is a more modern and trendy setting.

Budget

Fifth, you need to consider your budget. Stone setting can be expensive, so you need to make sure you are comfortable with the cost before you make a decision.

Bonus Tips: Caring for your stone-set jewellery

Stone-set jewellery can be a beautiful and valuable addition to your wardrobe, but it is important to care for it properly in order to keep it looking its best. Here are a few tips for caring for your stone-set jewellery:

Avoid wearing your jewellery when you are doing activities that could damage it, such as swimming, exercising, or doing housework.

Store your jewellery in a jewellery box or case when you are not wearing it.

Have your jewellery cleaned and polished by a professional jeweller on a regular basis.

Avoid getting your jewellery wet.

Do not use harsh chemicals on your jewellery.

Be careful not to drop or hit your jewellery.

By following these tips, you can help to keep your stone-set jewellery looking its best for many years to come
